Makazole Mapimpi’s hot form celebrated by peers

Southern Kings and Border speedster Makazole Mapimpi was voted as MyPlayers Player of the Month for April.

After impressive performances by a host of South African players on the Super Rugby scene in recent weeks, the MyPlayers panel (with the assistance of Die Burger and Netwerk24 sports writer Stephen Nell) shortlisted Makazole Mapimpi along with Stormers lock Eben Etzebeth, Southern King flank Chris Cloete, Lions second-rower Franco Mostert and Bulls utility back Jesse Kriel.

After a series of voting by all South African professional players, Mapimpi emerged as the winner after receiving the most nominations.

This accolade was well-deserved for the 26-year-old Mdantsane local as he’s the current South African joint top try-scorer in Super Rugby this season (along with Lions wing Courtnall Skosan), having crossed the chalk on seven occasions in 2017.

After starting his professional career at Border as an U19 player in 2009, Mapimpi has grown from strength to strength, playing his way into the Southern Kings Super Rugby squad for the 2017 season. He’s been a regular try-scorer for Border on the domestic scene, which earned him a step-up to higher levels.

He’s been a prominent feature during the Kings’ impressive rise in form in recent weeks, which saw the team achieve back-to-back wins for the first time in their history. These included successive victories over the Waratahs in Sydney and Rebels in Port Elizabeth. He was also voted Man of the Match during the Kings’ hammering of the Melbourne side, which saw him score a try and create several opportunities on attack.

“To be named the MyPlayers Player of the Month is proud moment for me as it’s major recognition from my team-mates and opponents. That’s a great honour,” Mapimpi told MyPlayers.

“When I started playing professional rugby at a young age, I never thought I’d have the opportunity to play Super Rugby. When making my senior provincial debut for Border in 2014, I just focused on enjoying my game and making the most of my opportunities on the field.

“I’ve been working hard on my game, especially during the pre-season, and I’m very happy with my progress this far. I hope my achievements this season will set a foundation for many more exciting opportunities.”

The MyPlayers Player of the Month award gifts Mapimpi a trip for two to Marataba Trails Lodge for two nights, including game activities and game drive drinks, proudly sponsored by South African travel company The Safari Guys.

“I’d just like to thank MyPlayers and The Safari Guys for this great award and amazing prize,” said Mapimpi. “I didn’t expect this at all, so I look forward to an amazing experience at Marataba Trails Lodge.”
